Alternative Grants and Bursaries

In addition to the statutory support that is available, as a full-time undergraduate you may also be eligible to receive additional scholarships or bursaries, depending on your financial circumstances, previous academic achievement, or the course you are undertaking.

Subject-based scholarships

Depending on the subject you have chosen to study, there may be additional scholarships that are available to you that are administered by your School.  The eligibility criteria can vary depending on the School, but students are usually judged according to academic performance and/or financial need.  These scholarships are offered in addition to the Birmingham Scholarship.  You should contact your school for details.

Music Scholarships

In recognition of the role that music plays within the University, we offer five music scholarships each year. These are for applicants to disciplines other than Music, and provide 20 hours of musical tuition per year in a addition to access to the Department of Music's specialist facilities. The scholarships are open to candidates who have already achieved Grade 8 in instrumental or vocal studies.

Sports scholarships

Sport has always been an important part of life at Birmingham, in terms of both our world-leading School of Sport and Exercise Sciences and our successful University sports teams. In recognition of this, University of Birmingham Sport offers around 30 scholarships each year to international-level performers from any academic department and of any nationality.

Scholarship support consists of facility membership (gym and swimming pool), strength and conditioning work, sport science and medicine services (including physiotherapy), lifestyle workshops and help with sports-specific expenditure.  To learn more, visit the University of Birmingham Sport website.

The Eliahou Dangoor Scholarship Scheme

The Eliahou Dangoor Scholarships Scheme has been launched thanks to a generous donation of £3 million from Dr Naim Dangoor and will assist up to 4000 students at Russell Group and 1994 Group institutions.

It is anticipated that the University of Birmingham will offer in the region of 30 new scholarships each year. The scholarships will be valued at £1000 and each award will be tenable for one year. Detailed conditions for the scholarships have yet to be finalised by the University, however the basic eligibility criteria will be as follows:

  • Candidates must be due to commence their first year of undergraduate study from September 2010
  • Candidates must be of UK nationality, paying the full UK rate of tuition fee
  • Candidates must be undertaking a course in a science, technology, engineering or maths (STEM) subject
  • Candidates must be registered as full-time students
  • Candidates must meet specific widening participation criteria, to be agreed by the University of Birmingham

Allen and Elizabeth Murray Centenary Scholarships

Established by Professor Sir Kenneth Murray in memory of his mother and father, the Allen and Elizabeth Murray Scholarships scheme provides awards to the value of £2,000 to full-time home undergraduate students entering their second year of study. Candidates must be from a low-income background and be of outstanding academic ability.  Each scholar will have their scholarship renewed in their third year provided they maintain a 2:1 standard of progression.

The Allen Murray Centenary Scholarship is available to students in the schools of Biosciences, Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics and Physics and Astronomy.  The Elizabeth Murray Centenary Scholarship is available to students in the School of Health Sciences and the Institute of Applied Social Sciences.

Please note: The Allen and Elizabeth Murray Scholarships competition for 2009/10 is now closed. The competition for 2010/11 will re-open in October.

The MISYS Award for Information Technology subjects

The MISYS Charitable Foundation was created in 1997 with the goal of furthering education in information and communications technology worldwide. Its work focuses on three key areas: university scholarships, in the UK and overseas; funding for information technology (IT) equipment in UK state schools; and IT-related support for charities working in communities. The Foundation is funded directly through donations from MISYS plc, the global software company.

Scholarships are available to undergraduate home/EU students entering their 2nd year of a programme with a strong computing element (Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, etc), who are academically strong (averaging 2:1 or above) who are not in receipt of the Maintenance Grant or a Birmingham Grant.  On average scholarships are worth £1,000 per year, tenable for 2 years.  Application forms will be available at the end of January. 

The University will short list candidates to be put forward to the Foundation.  All applicants will be notified of the outcome of their application by the University.

The Leverhulme Trade Charities Bursary

In order to be eligible for this bursary, you must be an undergraduate student who is the son or daughter, spouse, widow or widower of a commercial traveller, chemist, or grocer, who has been engaged in this occupation in the UK for at least five years in the recent past. A parent or spouse who is unemployed (or deceased) but who fell within one of these three categories when their employment ceased is also included.  Funds are intended for those who are experiencing financial hardship.  The maximum value of the bursary is £3,000 per annum, however the award will be adjusted according to the circumstances of the candidate, and will be dependant on satisfactory academic performance.  Application forms are available from the Student Funding Office, or available to download from the Leverhulme Trade Charities Trust website.

Charles Brotherton Trust

Awards from the Charles Brotherton Trust are non repayable and they typically range between £200 and £1,000.  The trust fund was set up in order to assist British undergraduate and postgraduate students experiencing financial hardship and who are studying scientific subjects in particular, with priority going to students studying Chemistry and other related subjects.  The committee will also consider applications from students studying other subjects.

Nuffield Foundation Undergraduate Research Bursaries

The Nuffield Foundation Undergraduate Research Bursaries are designed for those considering scientific research as a career. They enable students to take part in a defined research project for six to eight weeks of the summer vacation. Students receive a bursary of £180 a week (£190 in London) to make the most of the experience and gain detailed insight into research. The Nuffield Foundation will be offering up to 375 bursaries in 2010. The closing date for this competition is Tuesday 9 February 2010. Whitworth Scholarship Awards

Whitworth Scholarship Awards are for prospective or current undergraduates or postgraduates of any engineering discipline who have completed a 2 year engineering apprenticeship.  The scholarships are valued up to £18,000 (for full time study up to £4,500 pa is available over 4 years, for part time study up to £3,000 pa). The closing date for applications is 30th June each year.

Alderman Frederick Smith Bequest / Holt Education Trust

The Alderman Frederick Smith Bequest provides a small number of scholarships each year for male undergraduates whose normal residence is in the City of Liverpool and are currently in receipt of statutory support via Liverpool Education Authority.

The Holt Education Trust provides a small number of scholarships each year for female undergraduates whose normal residence is in the City of Liverpool and are currently in receipt of statutory support via Liverpool Education Authority.

The Alderman Frederick Smith Bequest also provides travelling scholarships awarded to male and female undergraduates currently whose normal residence is in the City of Liverpool. The scholarship will be granted towards the cost of travel abroad during vacations, with applicants required to live abroad for more than four weeks and to state in their application the details of the proposed travel. These scholarships are granted only once, and are intended to assist in exceptional circumstances, which are not adequately covered by the present award regulations. 

Applicants will be required to state the specific circumstances that they wish the trustees to consider and include details of any extra expenditure in connection to their particular course of study.  The deadline for receipt of applications is Friday 5 March 2010. Scholarship opportunities for overseas study

The KAUST Discovery Scholarship

The KAUST Discovery Scholarship invites applications from undergraduates who want to undertake postgraduate study at the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) in Saudi Arabia.  Learn more on our postgraduate overseas funding webpages.

The Ridgeway Scholarship

The Ridgeway Scholarship provides the opportunity for students who are normally resident in Lincolnshire or Huntingdonshire, who are 1st or 2nd year undergraduates the opportunity to undertake a years study in the United States of America. 

The scholarship is for one academic year at the University of Evansville, Indiana, USA.  The Scholarship offers return air fare, tuition fees and room and board in University accommodation.

Applications are to be made to the College Secretary at Harlaxton College, Harlaxton Manor, Grantham, Lincs, NG32 1AG before the end of February 2010.
