Staff information

This page provides staff with information on how to respond to immigration queries from students, and which department to contact if they need visa advice themselves.

Advising students on immigration issues

Only trained immigration advisers can legally advise students on immigration.

It is illegal for a member of non-ISAS staff to give a student immigration advice.

If a student approaches you about immigration issues, you should refer them ISAS.  The ISAS website provide generic information, and students can receive specific immigration advice through an appointment with an adviser or online.

We provide all students with the written notes from their appointments.

Immigration consequences of academic decisions

Academic decisions such as leave of absence, deferred entry and externally repeating, can have serious implications for a student's ability to stay in the UK.

Students in the above situations may mistakenly believe that because they have a Student visa they are able to stay in the UK, however this is often not the case.

All students considering a leave of absence, deferred entry or externally repeating, should be advised to contact ISAS online and to include a copy of their current visa.

Advising students travelling abroad

ISAS advisers provide UK immigration advice only, we cannot advise on travelling abroad.  If you have students that need to travel overseas as part of their course, they need to check first if they can be assisted by International Relations.

If International Relations are unable to assist, students should use the immigration information provided by the embassy for the country they wish to travel to, embassies can be found on the Foreign Commonwealth Office (FCO) website.

Visa advice for staff

The ISAS service is for student immigration queries, we do not give advice to academic or support staff unless they want to change to student status at this university.  If you need immigration advice you need to speak to Human Resources.
