This page explains the security services available both on and off the University campus and where you can seek help if you have been a victim of crime.
If you are on University property call campus security: 0121 414 4444.
If you are not on campus property or can not get hold of campus security call the emergency services on 999 (you will then be asked which service you require eg police, ambulance or fire brigade). This call is free from any telephone.
It is important that you take steps to protect yourself and your property whilst in the UK, please read the British Council Safety First booklet (PDF 1.60MB, opens new window) which explains the security issues you need to know, the action you should take before coming to the UK and whilst you are here.
The University of Birmingham has a Security service that maintains a 24-hour, 365 days a year presence throughout the Edgbaston and Selly Oak campuses, all main student residences and some non-residential outlying properties.
If you need emergency assistance from security dial 44444 from internal phones or 0121 414 4444 from any phone.
For further information about the services offered by security see the Security website.
West Midlands Police hold a drop in at the Police Room in University Centre (close to Spar). The office is open every Wednesday between 12.00pm to 2.00pm and the Campus Liaison Officer will be available for general advice including any issues relating to Crime Prevention. Bicycle security locks are also available for purchase at the subsidised rate of £5 per lock.
If you have been affected by a criminal incident you can seek confidential support from trained counsellors at the University Counselling and Guidance service.
