Finance

Before starting your course and travelling to the UK  you must have sufficient funds to cover your tuition and living costs, it is not possible to raise enough money to cover tuition fees and living costs through part-time work.

How can I pay my tuition fees?

Once you have registered online you will automatically be taken to the university fee payment web pages. This will inform you of how to make your payment. You can either pay the full amount, or pay by instalments through direct debits - this is when you agree that instalment will  be taken directly from your bank account (this will incur a fee).

If you have further queries regarding tuition fees you should contact the Finance Office.

Should I be paying home or international tuition fees?

Please refer to the UKCISA information on tuition fees to help you assess your fee status. This guide should give you a clear idea of whether you have a home or International student status.

The decision as to whether you will receive home fee status will be made by the University Admissions department. You need to meet all the requirements to be given home fee status. If you would like to discuss the matter further you should contact the relevant person for your course within the university admissions department.

Cost of living in the UK

You should ensure that you have enough funds to cover your tuition and living costs for the duration of your course before you travel to the UK.  If you do not have these finances in place before coming to the UK you are very likely to struggle financially and may have to leave your course before completing.

The cost of living will depend on a number of factors such as the type of accommodation you have, the amount you spend on food, travel, clothing and social activities.

Applying for funding

University funding

Details of university funding can be found on the websites of the Student Funding Office and International Relations Office.

Other funding

See the link below information about the different research councils and funding opportunities.

  • Research Council UK - information on funding opportunities from research councils
  • The Foyer-UNIAID Bursary scheme - The scheme is intended for students who would benefit most from an accommodation bursary. The Bursary Scheme is open to UK and EU Nationals, and those given indefinite leave to remain in the UK, who are in full-time undergraduate study in the UK
  • British Council website
  • FunderFinder - this is a directory of organisations that provide funding.
  • Educational Grants Advisory Service (EGAS) - EGAS is an independent advice agency, which is principally concerned with assisting people who wish to enter further or higher education but who are not eligible for statutory funding (eg Government grants or bursaries). It can also provide advice on the statutory funding system.

Opening a bank account

We strongly advise that you open a bank account in the UK, as if you want to extend your visa it is easier to use evidence from a UK bank account than an overseas account. For details of how to open a bank account please see our guide on opening a bank account (PDF, 33 KB, opens new window).

Financial problems

You should have sufficient funds to pay for your tuition and living costs before you enrol onto your course, therefore you should not experience difficulties. However occasionally students can experience problems, such as a delay in receiving funds from a sponsor, or personal financial difficulties.  If you are in this situation please contact ISAS.
