Staff who are concerned about the academic progress or psychological state of individual students can receive prompt professional advice. A rota system ensures a member of the Counselling and Guidance team is on 'Consultation' duty each day (extension 45130) including the examination period.
Tutors and academic staff can refer a student to Counselling and Guidance with their consent, or can advise a student to contact Counselling and Guidance directly.
Tutors are encouraged not to send students to the service for the explicit purpose of obtaining a letter supporting extenuating circumstances for Exam Boards if the student has no history of contact with the service.
The service will, of course, support such students in their current difficulty and additionally, for students who have consulted the Counselling and Guidance team, a new extenuating circumstances support form can be completed - see the Extenuating Circumstances website for more information.
Professional staff within Counselling and Guidance contribute to staff training within the Staff Development Unit.
