As well as one-to-one counselling, we offer our support through workshops, tailored group sessions, and online.
We provide short term counselling, in person or online, for all registered students in order to help you engage more effectively in your academic and social environment and to be sufficiently free from psychological distress to achieve your potential.
Counselling can help you to understand aspects of your life which have been causing you problems. The understanding that you gain may lead to making changes in your life; changes which may seem small but which can have a significant effect on your wellbeing. For some, counselling may also provide a form of support during a difficult period.
Alongside our one-to-one counselling and assessments, we offer workshops and groups to help you manage your well-being in a supportive group environment.
Workshops are one-off sessions which aim to give you practical tools to manage emotional issues such as exam anxiety or stress.
Groups meet regularly over the course of several weeks to address such issues as self-confidence, bereavement and coming out.
During the exam period we run walk-ins every weekday to help students deal with exam stress.
In order to provide support for extenuating circumstances we need to have had the opportunity to work with you for a minimum of 2 counselling sessions. Usually, in order for anything we write to be of use to your department, we would need to see you for around 4 sessions. You will need to complete a form and bring it in to the service for your counsellor to complete their part.
We make available to students Wellbeing, an innovative online programme to help you improve your health and wellbeing.
We offer group mediation sessions for flatmates, tutor groups, or any group of students who are not getting on with each other.
All our counselling work is confidential. This means that we will not disclose that you have contacted us without your written permission. However, if we are concerned about your safety or the safety of another person you tell us about, we may need to contact someone (for example, your GP) in order to protect you or another person. Similarly, if you tell us about an illegal activity that you are involved in, we cannot guarantee to maintain confidentiality.
We keep notes about all our contact with you. Notes are kept securely and confidentially and are destroyed after seven years. Any request to see notes kept about you must be made in writing to the University Data Protection Officer.
