Enterprising Behaviour and Ideas Generation Module

Thinking about starting your own business? Or want to demonstrate to a potential employer that you a creative thinker and a ‘go getter’? This module allows you to develop the necessary skills to behave and act in an enterprising way, and introduces you to business planning skills.

This is a blended learning module with exercises and content in webCT, plus tutor led face-to-face workshops.

What you will cover in the module:

  • The entrepreneurial mindset and enterprising behaviours

  • Personal skills and attitudes

  • Entrepreneurial teams

  • Creativity and idea generation techniques

  • Methodology for team-based idea generation

  • Turning ideas into plans, and plans into actions

  • Presenting ideas with impact

  • Critical evaluation of venture proposals

The module will introduce participants to the idea of enterprising behaviours and entrepreneurial characteristics. Beginning with an audit of one’s own strengths and experiences, the material will help the student to identify areas that can be developed, and those that may require the complementary talents of others. A reflective journal will aid this process.

Participants will be exposed to a number of current techniques in creative thinking and idea generation. A methodology for collaborative creativity will be introduced, and working in teams, students will develop a proposal for a new venture.

Teams will work outside of timetabled workshops, with tutorial support, to prepare a 'pitch' for their proposals. In the final contact session, the 'pitches' will be delivered to course leaders and peers. Individuals will then critically evaluate others' proposals, carrying out the 'due diligence' that assesses the viability of an idea and presenting this in the form of a written report.

The terms 'entrepreneur' and 'enterprising' will be considered in their broadest sense, not only referring to those who create new businesses, but also to those who bring about change by working within organisations or independently.
