The Benefits of the Personal Skills Award

Almost 300,000 students graduate each year. Have you thought about how you will stand out to employers and compete in the job market? The Personal Skills Award is an optional award designed for undergraduate students to develop and enhance your employability.

Why should I take the Personal Skills Award?

The graduate jobs market is an increasingly competitive area; almost 300,000 students graduate every year. As a result, employers are looking for students who graduate with more than just a degree; they want to see explicit evidence that you have made the most of your time at University, and taken the time to develop the skills that they are looking for.

''Twenty-first century graduates need to demonstrate to employers that they can 'hit the ground running'. In addition to working hard to gain a good degree, students should engage in extra-curricular activities and obtain work experience in order to develop skills that will make them better prepared for the world of work''.
Carl Gilleard, Chief Exec, Association of Graduate Recruiters

How will the PSA help me to stand out to employers?

The PSA, no matter which pathway you take, will help you to stand out to employers. You will be able to demonstrate that you have taken on extra commitments in order to enhance your employability and prepare yourself for employment.

The PSA will help you to develop your skills through either:

  • Involvement in extra-curricular activities or
  • Structured teaching in accredited modules

The PSA will enable you to reflect upon these skills through either:

  • Attendance at employability workshops, designed to help you reflect upon the skills you have developed or
  • Reflective assessment

The PSA will help you  to articulate the skills and experiences you have gained; this enables you to demonstrate to employers that you have developed the skills they are looking for.

What is employability?

"A set of achievements - skills, understanding and personal attributes - that make graduates more likely to gain employment and be successful in their chosen occupations, which benefits themselves, the community and the economy".
Professor Mantz Yorke, 'Employability in Higher Education: what it is - what it is not', LTSN/SECT 2004

In 1900, Joseph Chamberlain founded the University of Birmingham to create a new model for higher education and to produce the minds that would shape the modern industrial world.

Today, the University of Birmingham endeavours to enable and inspire students to develop their potential, grow intellectually, gain skills, understanding and attributes, that will empower them on to make an impact on society of benefit to themselves, the community and the economy, locally, nationally and internationally.
