About the Points-Based System

  • In 2009 the United Kingdom Government introduced the Points-Based System (PBS).
  • PBS means there is a more objective and clear decision-making process if you wish to come to or stay in the UK.
  • Under PBS, institutions such as universities have to have a 'sponsor licence'.
  • There are 5 Tiers of the Points-Based System. Tier 4 is the most valid Tier for international students wishing to come to the UK for study.
  • If you don't already have leave to enter the UK for study but you wish to come to the UK for study, or remain in the UK for study, you need to make an application under Tier 4.
  • PBS only covers students from outside the European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland.

  • The University of Birmingham is a licensed sponsor with the UK Border Agency.
  • From 22 February 2010 all potential students, and current students wanting an extension to their visa, will need a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) number before they apply for a visa to enter or remain in the UK as a student.
  • If you are a new student the University will give you a CAS number when you have applied and been accepted onto a course of study.
  • For continuing students the University will give you a CAS number when your academic department has confirmed your progress and attendance.
  • The CAS number will be emailed to you to be used in the visa application.
  • CAS numbers are valid for six months but you should not submit your visa application until 3 months before your course start date or expiry of your current visa.
