Peer Observation

Guidance on Peer Observation of Teaching

There is no official, or 'best', method for carrying out peer observations.  You can select one of the four approaches suggested here, or you can use an alternative of your choice.  Whichever you choose, you must submit a brief report to your School/Department peer observation co-ordinator. A standard form is provided for this.

This page and the downloadable forms provided here were updated on 1st March 2006, to reflect recent changes to the University's Code of Practice on Peer Observation of Teaching.  Please use these new materials in preference to any old forms.

Revised guidelines (PDF, 21KB)

  • Option 1: Checklist approach
  • Option 2: Open categories form
  • Option 3: Chronological record for stimulated recall
  • Option 4: 'Ethnographic' notes

The front cover of each set of forms gives further suggestions.

  • Standard proforma for reporting peer observation to School co-ordinator
