A statement is an official document that confirms:
- You are, or were, a registered student with the University of Birmingham
- When you started your programme of study
- When you are expected to finish your programme of study or
- When you finished your programme of study
You should log a call to an Enquiries Officer specifying which type of statement you would like, and any extra information that you require.
To ensure we can locate your record please provide the following information when you request your statement:
- Full name at time of study
- Student ID number (if known)
- Date of birth
- The course you studied or are studying
- The dates you started and finished your course
- The address you would like the statements to be sent
Statements can also be requested in person at the Enquiries Counter in Aston Webb building.
There are several types of statement available for you to request. Information about these statements and how to request them is available through the links below:
All statements contain the following information as standard:
- Full name
- Student ID number
- JACS code
- Full or part time study
- Start and finish dates
A Proof of Registration statement is sufficient for most instances where students need to prove that they are a registered student with the University of Birmingham.
External re-sit students and students currently taking a leave of absence should apply for a bespoke statement.
You may require a letter from the University when applying for a visa to certain countries. International students from outside of the EU will need statements for visa applications within the EU. These statements will contain both your home and termtime address so please ensure both of these are up-to-date before you request your statement.
Some embassies will also require that the statement be addressed to them, so please ensure you mention the country you are travelling to when you make your request.
Postgraduate Research Students often require specific information to be contained within their statements.
These detailed statements can take longer to produce. Please allow 14 days for statements of this type to be produced.
MPhil students may be asked to provide details of their submission deadlines. This will include details of their Thesis Awaited period of registration, also known as the "Writing Up" period.
We provide submission deadline information for all PhD statements (i.e. Thesis Awaited period of registration) and we're able to include details relating to examinations and oral examinations. We can also provide details relating to graduation dates.
This statement is usually requested by students who have left the University of Birmingham. It is a standard registration statement confirming a student's dates of attendance and including:
- The date they completed their degree
- The outcome (result) of their degree
- Their graduation date or
- Their expected graduation date
International students will often require a statement to clearly state that "The University of Birmingham is a United Kingdom recognised body listed by the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills (DIUS)".
When you arrive at University you may wish to open a bank account. To do so you will be asked to provide evidence that you are a student with the University of Birmingham. Our bank letters will assist you with this.
The letter will contain information about you, such as your date of birth and full name. Information about where you live both when at home and where you live during term-time. Information about your programme of study such as your course title and duration.
Our automated bank letters cater for University branches only. Whilst they may be accepted by other branches, it is best to ask what they require before ordering a bank letter. We are also able to provide bespoke statements.
To request a bank letter log a call to an Enquiries Officer and please also include the name of the bank with the request.
A bespoke statement will include your personal details and information about your programme of study.
We will include further information relating to your programme of study at the University of Birmingham as long as it is reflected in the Student Records Database. We are unable to omit information about your programme of study that may mislead a future employer or educational establishment.
Bespoke statements can include additional information in relation to your studies, such as certain scholarships you might be receiving or placements you might be going on. We cannot include any information that cannot be confirmed by the University.
We are able to confirm the cost of your tuition fees for each year of your programme of study. We are not able to confirm payment of your tuition fees, you can request this information from Student Fees and Payments.
The cost of your tuition fees can be included in any of the statements listed above.
We are able to provide information about when a student's graduation ceremony will take place, providing that they successfully complete their programme of study. It is also possible to include information relating to the allocation of guest tickets.
