Requesting overseas examinations

Information for students who would like to request to sit their examinations overseas.

Who can request overseas examinations?

Students who are classified as overseas for fee purposes may be permitted to undertake any necessary supplementary assessment in their home country (this concession also covers EU students normally domiciled outside the UK).

Overseas sittings are not available to students going on holiday or working overseas. Students should complete a request for Examinations to be held overseas form

Overseas sittings are subject to approval by a student's School or Department and cannot be guaranteed.  All overseas examination requests must be authorised by your School/Department Examinations Officer before arrangements can be made.

Who arranges the overseas exam?

Students are responsible for making the initial contact with the British Embassy to gain permission to sit their exams.

Once a contact has been established the Examinations and Congregations Office will start making arrangements with them on a students behalf.  Where there is no local British Embassy representation, alternative arrangements will be made where possible, providing that the security of the University’s examination procedures is not compromised.

Students may only nominate a University if they have obtained confirmation that the University is willing to hold their examinations and the student is able to supply a contact name and full postal address.

Fees

An administration fee of £100 is payable upon application and the deadlines for submission of completed forms to the Examinations and Congregations Office is:

  • 10 February 2012 (Main Summer period)

  • 9 July 2012 (Supplementary Period)

Late Applications will not be accepted. Students will also be responsible for paying any fees or charges imposed by the overseas venue.

Venues

Overseas examination sittings must all initially be sat with a British Council.  In the event that the British Council is not able to accommodate the examination sitting(s) the student will be responsible for confirming a couple of alternative venues.  The Examinations and Congregations Office will then contact these venues and will nominate the most appropriate venue once approval has been received.

Please note  It may sometimes be necessary for a student to return to the University to sit their examinations if a suitable alternative venue has not been found.

Erasmus/Exchange Programmes

The Examinations and Congregations Office does not centrally administer arrangements for overseas sittings for students on the Erasmus/Exchange programmes. If you are required to sit any examinations after returning to your country of study you should contact your own School or Department who may be able to liaise direct with your home University.
