General conduct
- You are not permitted to communicate or attempt to communicate with any other candidates during the examination.
- Answers must be all your own work and where other material is quoted, you should state the source(s) from which it is derived.
- You are not permitted to use any answer book, writing paper or graph paper other than that supplied in the examination venue.
- All unauthorised material (such as revision notes, books and data tables) should not be brought into the examination venue. If you are in possession of any unauthorised material this should be placed in your bag or coat in the designated area, indicated by the Invigilators. Students found in possession of such material during an examination will be referred to Student Conducts and Appeals for investigation.
- Any material required for an examination will be provided in the hall. (If candidates are permitted to introduce books, notes or other material into an examination hall, they will be informed by the Department concerned, and the nature and extent of the authorised material will be stated on the question paper.)
- No part of an answer book should be torn out and all answer books and other material supplied in the examination room should be left behind on candidates' desks at the end of the examination. Please do not attempt to remove any answer books or question papers from the examination room.
- Students are not permitted to bring into the exam room scrap pieces of paper for making notes; there is a space available in the answer book for students to make any necessary notes during the exam.
- You may not leave the examination room during the first half hour or during the final ten minutes of your examination. You will be notified by the Senior Invigilator when there are ten minutes remaining. You are not allowed to leave the examination for any reason without permission

- Calculators may be used in an examination, except where the rubrics of the question paper state that they are not permissible.
- Calculators should be silent, have no external means of programming and have numeric function only.
- Any calculators that have an alphabetic display of stored data (including text) or equations or alphabetic formulae are prohibited.
- If you are found to be using a prohibited calculator or a calculator during an examination when the paper states that they are not permissible, the calculator will be confiscated and the matter referred to Student Conduct and Appeals as an Examination Irregularity.
- Students are not permitted to use the calculator function on a electronic personal organiser or mobile telephone.

- A mobile phone is a method of storing unauthorised material and is potentially a disruption to other candidates – please therefore leave at home. If you do bring it to an exam, you should be aware of the following:
- The University of Birmingham accepts no responsibilities for any loss or damage to your mobile phone if it is brought into the examination hall or left in a cloakroom. You will be unable to claim for it from the University if it is lost or damaged.
- If you do bring your mobile phone into an examination you will not be permitted to place this on your desk, instead you should ensure it is switched off and placed on the floor underneath your desk. If your mobile phone is not switched off or is found on your desk it will be confiscated. If your mobile phone is not switched off and it rings during an examination, creating a disruption, this matter will be referred by the Senior Invigilator to the Examinations and Congregations Office.
- If your mobile phone is confiscated it will be retained until such time that it can be checked that it does not hold or has not been used to access unauthorised material. This may cause a delay in returning it to you of at least 24 hours.

Dictionary use for students whose first language is not English
- Students whose first language is not English will be permitted to use a standard, unannotated and unmarked dictionary during their examinations except where the question paper rubric specifically forbids their use.
- Students must complete the Dictionary Approval Form and get it signed and stamped by Enquiry Services based in Block C, Aston Webb Building, unsigned dictionary approval letters will not be accepted.
