Information for students who have special requirements during examinations.
Due to the high number of students requiring exam accommodations, students are requested to make these arrangements no later than 30th March 2012. The Examinations and Congregations Office cannot guarantee that any requests made after this date will be processed or that any examination accommodations set after this date.
If you have not already registered with the Disability and Learning Support Service (DLSS) or the Mental Health Advisory Service (MHAS) but think you may be eligible for exam accommodations you will need to contact us, and provide suitable medical evidence. Any currently registered students who are unsure whether they have the appropriate exam accommodations in place, please contact your Key Worker. For most students the exam accommodations you had in previous years will continue for each year of your study.
If you have a temporary condition or illness, you will need to provide medical evidence directly to the Examinations and Congregations Office based in the C Block, Aston Webb Building.
Personalised examinations timetable for students who have already have exam provisions put into place for them can be collected from the Enquiry Services desk based in C Block, Aston Webb Building from Monday 23 April 2012.
For more information about exam accommodations and how to contact the DLSS or MHAS, please see www.as.bham.ac.uk/disability
Students are responsible for arranging an appointment to meet the Disability and Learning Support Service for an assessment for any disabilities that they may have which may effect their study or exams eg. Dyslexia
The Examinations and Congregations Office (ECO) cannot guarantee to put alternative arrangements in place if students are assessed at a late stage close to the examination period.
From the Summer 2004 examination period the time allowance in cases of certified dyslexia and dyspraxia was standardised to 15 minutes per hour.
If an additional time allowance or access to a PC to complete your examinations forms part of your Student Support Agreement (SSA) ECO will arrange for exams to be done in alternative examination venues only during centrally managed exam periods. Exams done outside the central examination periods will be managed and arranged by your home School/Department.
Students who have been assessed as requiring the use of a computer or the use of a computer and extra-time only will sit their examinations in a central venue separate from the main body of students but alongside other students requiring the use of a computer.
Some students need to be in a room on their own, or possibly with one or two others. Departmental sittings are only available to students whose requirements cannot be accommodated centrally e.g. separate room, amanuensis etc.
All students who require departmental sittings should have a Student Support Agreement (SSA) to this effect.
Please note whilst the Disability and Learning Support Service is responsible for the recommendations, responsibility for implementing the recommendations rests with the students School or Department. If the Disability and Learning Support Service has agreed a separate sit you must ask your Department what arrangements they have made and what venues will be used.
Please allow plenty of time to do this - do not leave it until the day before your exam expecting everything to be in place.
Students who have been assessed as requiring extra-time only will sit their examinations in a central venue separate from the main body of students but alongside other students receiving extra time.
If you have a temporary disability during the examination period please contact your own School or Department immediately. You should obtain the appropriate evidence of any medical condition and submit to your School or Department and also to the Examinations and Congregations Office based in the C Block, Aston Webb Building.
Students who have medical conditions which may mean that they may require medical assistance during an exam are requested to sit their examinations in the UMP. Students are responsible for booking an appointment with the UMP for an assessment of their medical needs to be made before they are permitted to sit their exams at the UMP. This should be done well in advance of their examination sittings.
Students should complete an Application for University Medical Practice Examinations Form. This form needs to be signed by the UMP before examination sittings at the UMP can be arranged. Once an assessment of the student's medical needs has been made, the UMP will return the completed form to the Examinations Office.

Please note Students are required to be assessed on a yearly basis for this exam requirement to remain in place, there is no guarantee that a sit in the UMP in one academic year will be permitted in the next academic year.
A personal examination timetable with the alternative examination arrangements will be provided for all students who have an SSA. These will be made available as follows:
A personal timetable can be collected from the Enquiry Office, Block C, Aston Webb Building in the week commencing Monday 23 April 2012.
A personal timetable will be sent to home addresses as held on the Student Portal.
If you require any further assistance with any aspect of arranging alternative arrangements for your exams please contact
