Student Employability

Our employability team is continuously enhancing its range and quality of service in order to help our students identify and achieve their individual career aspirations, have access to great work experience and employment opportunities, enhance vital personal and professional skills and to develop an enterprising approach to their career management.

Careers advice and guidance

Our advice and guidance services are delivered by experienced and professionally qualified Employability Consultants and advisers, ensuring that all Birmingham students have equal access to professional and impartial support in helping to plan and manage their individual career paths. This support includes daily drop in services, careers counselling interviews and career management and employability workshops, and is delivered centrally and at course level.

Careers information

In order to provide the most accessible service to our large student cohort, we have developed 24/7 careers information provision via the careers website. This allows students to get careers information when and where they want.

Student enterprise

Our own Entrepreneurship and Innovation service provides advice and support to students considering self employment, including access to incubator areas to support student run businesses. The Centre’s staff also delivers customised entrepreneurship training and development to Colleges and Schools.

Employers and work experience

Birmingham University and its students are specifically targeted by the world’s major graduate recruiters and each year our dedicated Employer Liaison Team organise over 120 employer presentations on campus. In addition our team also run several subject specific and generic graduate recruitment Fairs and events.

Our Work Experience staff also develops generic and subject specific work experience opportunities, greatly enhancing student skill development and employability.

Skill development

Supporting the development of personal and professional skills, we run the highly regarded Personal Skills Award. This programme enables students to undertake additional training and development alongside their courses, producing excellent supporting evidence for career management and job applications, whilst also receiving a formal recognition via the PSA award itself.

Through all of our services and resources we are working hard to ensure that each student arriving at Birmingham has the best opportunity to develop their skills and experiences whilst studying here and then is able to graduate on to a successful graduate career.
