Plan B competition

The innovation competition for all University of Birmingham students. Are you the entrepreneur of the future? Could you start a business, social enterprise, charity or bring about radical change inside another organisation?

Details

Plan B seeks people with ideas and vision, who can devise and communicate a plan to achieve that vision. Plans must address at least one of the four major themes listed below and will be assessed first in the student’s college. Short-listed candidates then attend a first ‘pitching’ round with the best pitches being entered into the final live pitch competition.

The major themes, which link to the University's main research strengths, are:

  1. Saving lives
  2. Influencing society
  3. Contributing to sustainability
  4. Innovative use of technology

Application process and judging

Applications need to succinctly describe the idea and give an outline of how it will be made into a reality. Aspects of finance, marketing and operations will all play a part, as will projections of the success or impact of the project.

Judges look for innovation, impact, realistic expectations, clear plans and a persuasive ‘unique selling point’.

Short-listed candidates will be invited to give a presentation (or ‘pitch’) to a panel of judges within their theme. The winners from each theme will then go head-to-head in a final presentation round to find the overall winner.
