Fizzing with Success - Plan-B 2012

26 January 2012 saw the culmination of Entrepreneurship and Innovation’s annual Plan-B competition take place on the very top floor of Muirhead Tower, Edgbaston Campus. Students who had innovative ideas to start businesses, social enterprises or charities entered the board room to put forward their proposals and the shortlisted few went on to pitch their ideas to a panel of investment-savvy judges. Competition was tough and from the shortlisted few who pitched in the morning session on the day, only four went through to the afternoon’s final.

Caine Woodward was named the overall winner with his idea for an effervescent drink tablet made from natural ingredients. Caine, who is studing International Business with Chinese Language and graduates this year, made a big impression on the judges not only with his idea but with his well-researched and presented proposal. For all his hard work, Caine walks away with an award of £1,500 plus £500 worth of market research to take his idea forward to the next level.

Second place went to Sarah DeSouza who is undertaking her BSc in Psychology and whose proposal aims to help teenagers gain life skills through the use of movie therapy. Sarah’s obvious enthusiasm has taken her from a placement in Singapore funded by the University’s Honey Pot fund, where she studied the use of move therapy, to taking on the challenge of helping young people in the UK in the same way. Plan-B awarded Sarah £750 to help her develop her idea.

Caine and Sarah were joined by two other finalists, Areeb Khan and Andrew McLoughlin, both of whom are currently studying for their MSc in Road Management and Engineering. Areeb’s passion for football helped shape his proposal for Torneoz.com; a focused social networking site promoting sports tournaments and related activities. Andrew’s proposal was based on his studies and involves setting up a transport engineering consultancy that operates in middle and low income countries. Both Areeb and Andrew received an award of £250.

Along with the finalists’ awards, all entrants also had the chance to be entered into a prize draw. The first prize of an HP laptop was won by Gabriella Buxton, who submitted her idea on providing the fashion-conscious public with clothing items to rent and buy at a cheaper price than they would be available on the high street. Second prize, also an HP laptop, was won by Barnaby Grove who put forward his idea for discount vouchers for students in India.

Entrepreneurship and Innovation would like to extend their thanks to all those who gave up their time to judge the day’s shortlist and make sure the event was a success. Special thanks go to Santander for providing the cash awards and Phillip Rumjahn, Manager of the Santander branch at the Guild, who gave up his time to be part of the day. Special thanks also go to Marketest who provided the market research award and Hewlett Packard who provided the laptops for the prize draw. Best wishes go out to all our entrants and we look forward to seeing the development of your ideas in the near future.
