Learning Technologies

The University of Birmingham is committed to the use of learning technologies to enhance learning and teaching across the institution. A range of e-learning tools are available to staff through the institutional Virtual Learning Environment (iVLE) and support in the use of learning technologies is provided by the eLearning Team.

These web pages provide an overview of the types of e-learning activities that are possible using the iVLE and other learning technologies. The range of activities include: content creation and delivery, assessment and feedback, plagiarism detection, and online communication.

The eLearning Team aims to provide advice, guidance, support and training in the development of e-learning across the University. Working alongside staff within the Centre for Learning and academic Development (CLAD), the team brings together the knowledge and experience of a wide variety of learning technologies for the enhancement of the learning experience. The work of the team includes:

  • Managing WebCT and other elements of the iVLE;
  • Providing advice, training and support in the use of learning technologies;
  • Facilitating events to promote the use and understanding of learning technologies;
  • Supporting e-learning initiatives managed by other parts of Corporate Services;
  • Advising Corporate Services and the University as a whole on strategic matters relating to e-learning;
  • Provide guidance on the design, development and appropriate use of pedagogical principles to support the use of learning technologies.
