Student Representation System (SRS)

The aim of the SRS is to ensure that every student at Birmingham is effectively represented to the University and the Guild by a fellow student.

What is the Student Representation System?

The Student Representation System (SRS) is a partnership between the University of Birmingham and the Guild of Students. The aim of the SRS is to ensure that every student at Birmingham is effectively represented to the University and the Guild by a fellow student. It is founded on the belief that through effective representation students become partners in their education, allowing a more active involvement in, and ownership of, their learning.

Information for Staff Liaison Contacts

You should be familiar with the University's regulations on student representation and the SRS policy:

The Student Representation System policy has been revised for 2011/12.  Here is a summary of the main changes, which also includes some supplementary guidance.

Please note that, in addition to the requirements laid out in the 2011/12 Student Representation System Policy, the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education) has asked that, in 2011/12, all SSC's elect either a student chair, or a student co-chair who shares the role of chair with the SLC.  In previous years, SSCs have been encouraged to elect a student chair or co-chair, but it has not been a requirement.  This year, the student chair or co-chair should be elected by the end of the first SSC meeting of the academic year, and the Student Representation System Advisory Board (SRSAB) should then be notified of their name immediately (contact studentreps@guild.bham.ac.uk).

You should also be aware of the key dates in the SRS calendar, and the way in which you need to notify the Guild of your Student Representatives' contact details:

The Guild has provided information about the training that is available to student representatives in 2011/12:

Finally, the Guild has also provided guidance to help you recruit / elect student representatives.

This document also includes a number of useful appendices, which may be useful to you when recruiting student representatives and also throughout the academic year.

  • Student rep role description
  • Student rep chair / co-chair role description
  • Student rep secretary role description
  • Standard SSC terms of reference
  • Example of SRS Information to include in summertime communications
  • Student rep employability skills
  • SRS data sharing protocol for student rep data
  • SRS data sharing consent form
  • Step by step guide to using Survey Monkey in your Student Rep Election

In particular, the role descriptions, the standard SSC terms of reference and the list of student rep employability skills may be of interest to students and student representatives.
