About Special Collections

Cadbury Research Library: Special Collections collects and preserve rare books and original archives and manuscripts that are relevant to the University’s education and research agenda including the University’s own heritage collection which includes records of the founding and growth of the university dating back to 1826.

Cadbury Research Library

  • The Cadbury Research Library (CRL), the new home for Special Collections, holds 120,000 pre-1850 books dating from 1471 and over 3 million manuscripts. The CRL boasts a 45 seat reading room with specialist staff on hand to aid researchers, an active teaching programme, fully equipped conservation studio and reprographics service.
  • A regular schedule of talks and events to introduce staff, students and the community to the collections and a dynamic public exhibition programme both in the foyer of Muirhead Tower and by loaning items to other institutions.

Innovative projects

  • The Special Collections team are involved in innovative projects to promote access to the collections and engaged in the recent development of the Virtual Manuscript Room which provides online access to the internationally significant Mingana Collection.
